Day 6, 2 December, 2016
15 years old. Like many others, Katia’s family fled the East of Ukraine and the war during the summer of 2014. Her family owns a tulip plantation in the region of Donbass which allowed them to make ends meet during times of peace. The whole family was participating in the work with the flowers. Despite fear and the risks, the father and sometimes the children as well go back to their village to take care of the tulips at harvest time. Katia knows everything about the tulips and she speaks with enthusiasm about their secrets. She is also a talented pianist and singer. she sings her favorite Ukrainian songs with courage and joy in her eyes.
When they fled Donbass, Katia’s family welcomed 4 children who have lost their parents in the war. On the family photograph she left us, her parents are surrounded by 8 children. We wanted to know who were the adopted children so we asked her who her siblings were. Quite naturally she named everyone on the photograph without ever telling who was adopted. We were ashamed of our indiscretion and we remained silent in the face of such wisdom.
