Hassan

Day 3, 29 November, 2016

26 years old. He came to Taizé on the 5th of November 2015 together with 6 other Sudanese boys. He had to flee his home region of Darfur. From Sudan to Libya, Italy, France, Paris he ended up in Calais. When talking about Paris, most people think about the Eiffel Tower, the cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris and luxurious shops. But when Hassan thinks of Paris he remembers a school doomed to demolition in which hundreds of migrants were living without electricity and water, or the cold nights spent under a bridge fearing for what tomorrow would bring. He decided to head for Calais where he heard that kind volunteers were taking care of people, giving out food and helping with the paperwork. He had no desire of going to England and had no idea that Calais was on the way there.

Hassan says he is lucky to have landed in Taizé but we will probably never be able to tell him what a big gift it is to us that we got to know him. This year his dream is about to come true: he just started an apprenticeship to become an electrician. Thanks to his small wage he is now able to rent a studio apartment in Cluny. We are very happy that he is starting to get his independence, but we have to admit that the day he moved out we felt a pang of sorrow in our hearts.
